Grand Final- Kew vs. Park Orchards

Sunday 31st August

Last Sunday 24 boys from Kew Comets learned that to play as team - to support each other and to work hard and the play fair – you can over come to the odds and emerge the champions.

In four wind blown quarters every lad tried their hearts out and raised themselves from Green Division at the start of the season to the top of Brown Division in 2008 - and a probable role in Gold Division in 2009.

It was a remarkable victory against ladder leader Park Orchards that seemed to be their destiny from the moment they ran on to the ground.

After a season of ups and downs that saw them sneak into the final four on the strength of their wins in Green Division and a string of defeats coming into the finals it seemed that a berth in the grand final was a more of a dream than a foregone conclusion.

However, the fact that they had not beaten any of the finalists through the season did not concern the boys at all.  They had gelled into a formidable team after a stunning eight goal wet weather victory over Kew Rovers in the final home and way round and carried this form through to defeats of Macleod (2 points), Greythorn (22 points) and the grand final victory (11 points).

Q1
Kew 2.0 12 v Park Orchards 0.2 2

From the opening bounce that saw Adam tap the ball to Matt who then kicked into the forward line, it appeared that the Comets had the tail up and had come to play.

Park Orchards opened the scoring with a rushed behind, but our backline held on. and after a great running and bouncing run out of the backline by Adam, we slowly started to assert our dominance, kicking into a flukey wind that was driving across the ground from back pocket to forward pocket with a slight favour to our City end of the ground.

With the ball constantly along the far wing, the boys played the ball along the boundary to negate the opportunity Park Orchards had with what appeared to be the scoring end.  In the first of many plays of the day Matt ran the ball over the boundary line and allowed the boys to get back into position in the middle of the quarter and the pattern was set.  Run and kick when possible or head to the boundary line when we had the numbers against us.

A series of free kicks saw Park Orchards score a behind to put them 2 points up midway through the quarter, with the ball only in our attacking 50m arc once for the quarter, however another running attack by Adam saw the ball delivered into the forward line, and tough play from Dylan ended up getting Mark a free kick. He then short passed to Matt who kicked truly from 20m out, to put us in front for the first time in the match.  The boys looked on song, and started to assert their dominance on the game, with fluid play and strong kicking and marking.

At the next bounce, Park Orchard cleared the ball from the centre, but the indefatigable Adam ran down to half back to take a juggling mark and kick us out of danger. Mark cleared, and the ball ended up in the forward pocket hard up against the behind post.  Moments before the end of the quarter, Varun cleared the ball from the ruck in the forward pocket and Adam swooped on the ball, ran off his player, took a bounce, and kicked the goal that would later prove to be the match winner.

Q2 Kew 2.2 14 v Park Orchards 0.3 3

At the quarter time huddle, the wind picked up and Steve instructed the players to bring the ball into the middle of the ground until it was past the centre line. This turned out to be a prophetic instruction that was followed to a T by the lads.

The second quarter started with Adam tapping the ball to Louis who cleared and kicked the ball into the forward line, only to see it repelled back into the Park Orchards half of the ground.  We were saved by a typically strong mark by Max, who then played on and cleared the ball, to put us back into attack. Joel’s snap on goal fell just short and was cleared on the line.

The game of attrition had started and the Comets were not prepared to concede any easy scoring shots from this point.  The wind drove against several further scoring attempts by the lads as it raised its intensity and turned the game into rolling maul that saw the ball rarely leave the Comet’s attacking half as they began to assert their dominance.

The opposition’s best attack was cleared on the goal line by Adam, with assistance from Marcus, who kicked to Matt, who handballed to Danny. He then passed it to Alex and the ball was safely past the centre line.

The first score of the quarter did not arrive until Mark pooped through a behind after some excellent running and handball play that saw Varun gather the ball in the backline and handball off to Alistair, who flicked it to Joel.  Joel then kicked it to Mark who took the grab, flicked it back to Joel and then followed up, took the handball out of the pack and kicked his scoring shot.

Game On!  Another rushed behind saw us creeping incrementally ahead.  At this point the Park Orchards game started to succumb to our pressure and the loose ball gets were snapped up by Danny, Will and the omnipresent Adam.

A late rush to goal by the opposition saw James pursuing the bouncing ball in a tight one-on-one competition that saw him play doggedly in front of his man and emerge with a critical free kick that stopped an almost certain goal.  Our superior numbers to the ball saw us safely through the rest of quarter with great efforts by Harry and a super quarter from Mark.

A near-miss late quarter behind, saved from an almost certain goal by dogged defence from James, who pushed his player just as he kicked, again highlighted the quality of our defensive play, led ably by Max with his daring play-on dashes from centre half back just moments from the siren.

HALF TIME  “They’re prima donnas, fellas, they like to be in front but they don’t like to be behind”

Q3 Kew 2.2 14 vs. Park Orchards 0.3 3

The third quarter opened with a wish for a goal or two to try and seal the match, but it was not to be. The game was to go down to the wire and the wind had picked up, making clean football even more difficult – the strategy of bottling it up on the far boundary started to come into its own as Park Orchards kicked to the scoring end.

A few minutes into the quarter, Campbell grabbed a mark and passed it off to Matt, who kicked into a strong wind.  Joel got the free kick and bombed it into the square, where Adam spoiled and the ball fell to the ground and bounced around the forward line for a while until they mounted an attack that saw Ned take a strong mark on the goal line and deny them yet again.

One of the inspirational plays of the day was Louis chasing the gun number 18, who had little effect on the match due to his and Alex’s tagging roles, and getting a free kick paid for the Park Orchards star running too far with the ball.  It typified the resolve of the team and commitment to win the game.

Ultimately the winner of the third quarter was the wind that played havoc with kicking but a close second was the Comets who held Park Orchards scoreless and, although they didn’t score themselves, could see the grand final victory within their grasp.

What would Park orchards conjure in the final quarter to try and win the match?

Q4
In the final quarter, Park Orchards had to throw everything at us and the final stanza opened with a big attack that was repelled by Niam. The strategy for the rest of the game was to keep the ball bottled up and stop them from scoring.  By sticking close the opposition player and protecting the lead, that had not seen a goal kicked for two quarters, the boys tied down the opposition with close checking.

In a rolling ruck around the ground Park Orchard broke free and snapped a loose rolling balling toward goal, only to have it marked on the last line of defence my Matt, who quickly kicked the ball out to Adam, who marked and kicked on to Alex, who saw it safely over the boundary line again. The heart was out of the mouth yet again.

By the end of the quarter the wind was blowing a gale and the opposition managed to sneak a solitary goal despite the Comet’s best efforts.  But match was ultimately sealed by Adam when a slotted a goal from 30 metres from the boundary line in almost impossible conditions – moments later the siren sounded.

In the euphoria of the immediate post match celebrations Steve summed it up perfectly when he said:  You’ve all done yourselves proud today boys”.

Goals: Adam 2, Matt 1

Special mention to Steve de Graaff for coaching all year, and to Paul Ritchie as assistant coach and Ben Whitehead the Team Manager.

Congratulations to Adam Croxford for being the best man on the ground in the winning grand final team a well as the league best and fairest.

Kew Comets Gold – Grand Final v Canterbury

Kew 4.6.30 def Canterbury 1.7.13

On a windswept Sunday which was preceded by a huge downpour (which did not suit Donald Mac’s hair style), the Kew Gold Team took the premiership flag from a very gallant Canterbury by 17 points.

The first quarter was very even, with tough hard footy in difficult conditions, but it did not take long before the Kew boys hit the front and put scoreboard pressure back on Canterbury.

The Second quarter, after some strategic moves, saw the Kew Gold’s move ahead.

The third was the decider, with the team under strict rules as to how it was to be played with lots of butcher’s paper up on the wall with crazy drawings.

The last quarter saw the Kew boys three goals up, and to their credit, Canterbury gave it a big shake and threw everything at the Kew Golds, but in the end the lead that had built up was just too much for Canterbury to match.

Game Wrap-Up

The game was played in terrific spirit and was of a high standard in such difficult conditions.

Boys from both teams are to be congratulated on the game and all supporters should be amazed at the level of skill from these young men.

After the game, Kew and Canterbury got together in the same room to share lemonade and enjoy being with each other after such a long season.

There is no doubt that these two teams have forged a friendship of competition and sportsmanship that stand them in good stead in their careers. There was not a winner in the room after the game, there was a room full of young men who had just played a great game of footy.

Player Summary of the Game

Christian Mason – did as requested down back and really improved out of sight during the year.

Jez Hannan – A great year at Full Back, a new role and just as expected stepped up and did the job.

Jack Ryan – Under 12 boy who was outstanding in heavy traffic in the first quarter and played exactly as coach has requested.

Liam Curran – the quiet man who also improved out of sight, he did his job without any instruction or request.

Mitch Nixon – outstanding Under 12 recruit who took on a role at half back and played extremely well – keep an eye on this lad in the future.

Hugh Beasley – quality game at Centre Half Back, was the general down back with not much getting past him all day.

Coach’s Summary

How lucky we are to have the quality of people on the Committee at Kew Comets with all their hard work on and off the field. Thanks to you all for your time and effort.

Big thanks to our Manager Kerrie Sinclair – once again the Rolls Royce of Managers

All the parents who helped in a role during the year, Angus Hall for giving up his time to run water for his brother’s team, Donald McDonald for his time when available as runner.

John Checcin for his continued commitment as boundary umpire.

This year was about continuing what we had started in 2007,  fun, enjoyment, improvement, a strong team game plan and with it came success, but most of all I have met 24 terrific young men.

KGU Miss The Ultimate Prize

Next time you’re found, with your chin on the ground
There’s a lot to be learned, so look around

Just what makes that little old ant
Think he’ll move that rubber tree plant
Anyone knows an ant, can’t
Move a rubber tree plant

But he’s got high hopes, he’s got high hopes
He’s got high apple pie, in the sky hopes

So any time you’re gettin’ low
instead of lettin’ go
Just remember that ant
Oops - there goes another rubber tree plant

When troubles call, and your backs to the wall
There a lot to be learned, that wall could fall

Once there was a silly old ram
Thought he’d punch a hole in a dam
No one could make that ram, scram
He kept buttin’ that dam

‘cause he had high hopes, he had high hopes
He had high apple pie, in the sky hopes

So any time you’re feelin’ bad
instead of feelin’ sad
Just remember that ram
Oops - there goes a billion kilowatt dam

Competitive team sport is all about the process of producing an ultimate winner – and rightfully so. One team becomes the premier team in football and earns the title of season champion. There has to be something for all the players in all the teams to strive for and the ultimate reward is earned over a regular season followed by a final series of games.

The lyrics above were originally sung by Frank Sinatra in the 1959 movie, “Hole in the Head,” and they contain sound words of advice for the KGU football team. Whilst the ultimate prize of the Colts Division Three Premiership became a rubber tree too difficult to move, there was a rich bounty of rewards achieved by KGU in season 2008.

For a moment, let’s dwell on the last game KGU played. The game for the ultimate prize on offer – the Colts Division Three Premiership. It hailed for about 10 minutes in the first quarter, it was slippery for about three quarters and it was very windy for most of the game. The conditions affected both sides but it was KGU’s opponent, SFX Whitehorse Colts, that coped with the conditions best and imposed their pressure relentlessly on the Sex Panthers.

In the end, it was the desperation and determination and refusal to stop displayed by SFX and created from losing a recent grand final that defeated KGU. Competitive team sport will always provide amazing results and unpredictable results. Despite an equal number of players on either side with the same number of arms and the same number of legs, it is how the minds of a team function that will inevitably determine the outcome of a pressure game. Mental pressure cannot be seen but it is very powerful. The mind can shackle willpower. The harder you try the less you can do. Mental pressure is very difficult to combat unless you have experienced it a number of times and you develop the over-riding willpower to harness the pressure.

There is a theory that to truly feel the elation of a major achievement, one has to have plunged to the depths of a crushing defeat. I subscribe to that theory. If KGU remember what happened last Sunday and burn that memory and feeling into your minds, it will help you summon your willpower and your desperation in the future when you really need it. Not everything happens the way we plan it. It’s how we react to and learn from the unplanned results that make us who we are and who we will be.

The end of year report for the yearbook will examine the season rather than this Grand Final Report. My overwhelming emotion for this magnificent team of young men is pride. I am proud of the way they developed as individuals and as a team during the year; I am proud of the way they have conducted themselves throughout the whole year; I am proud of the way they handled defeat and endured the need to contain their emotions after the game for such a long time; and I am proud they have created such strong friendships.

Some people who don’t understand community football or have never bothered to find out what it’s all about would try to shrug off the conclusion to KGU’s year by saying “don’t worry, it’s only a game, it doesn’t mean much at all.”

Yes, it’s only a game but it became a platform for 24 young men to magnificently develop and display a multitude of characteristics that they will use throughout their lives – responsibility, teamwork, commitment, leadership, courage, determination, togetherness and friendship. KGU has transcended the usual club/team relationship and has made firm friends from strangers. Both Greythorn and Kew football clubs have been exposed to the benefits of supporting football for football’s sake over football for a junior football club’s sake. Only time will tell whether those benefits will be understood and embraced.

Just like the Falcon and the Comet, KGU flew in out of nowhere and has made a lasting impression. I’m not sure if I’ll ever see another football team called the Sex Panthers – who knows, perhaps they’ve started a trend! To the future and lessons learned!

So any time you’re gettin’ low
instead of lettin’ go
Just remember that KGU
Yes - there goes a wonderful football team
